Yeah the thieves haven athena runs are pretty good. Going to smaller islands despite the spawn adjustments and setting foot on the island is good too with the ocean crawlers. Assessing a weak ship and robbing people of their gems works too. I netted 22 gems last night with the thieves haven runs and other random encounter stuff.
