Dec 17, 2014 · Fairly often, I push the start button or remote start and the D turns over but doesn't actually start for several seconds. I've noticed this quite a few times since new and can't seem to find a similar reason. It doesn't really matter if it's hot or cold, the tank is full or a quarter, parked flat or on an incline, etc. The truck is my 2003 5.9L SLT with 113k miles, original owner and religious fluid maintenance has been followed. The issue is, on an intermittent basis, the engine will stumble and misfire (some low thuds, kind of like a muffled backfire) with complete loss of power. Have you tried battery reset to see if taking all of the systems back to zero helps? Disconnect negative cable, depress brake pedal 30 seconds, then reconnect and see what happens.

My guess is the pump is the issue. Repop pumps, like sensors and thermostats, aren't very good. Try priming it by pressing the start button with no brake for a few seconds. The first time the issue showed up was when I pushed the start button and took longer than usual to fire up. After that, the issue started to show up intermittently taking longer every time to fire up, but always started.

After a couple days, the truck started and ran as normal, started on the first key turn every time. Fast forward to this week, and the intermittent start issue is back.
