On my old 03 4runner I switched to Mobil 1 at around 30k miles. Shortly after this I started to get a leak at the transfer case actuator.The differential fluid is characterized, just like manual transmission fluid, by its SAE viscosity and API standards. You can generally find this information for your 4Runner in the owner's manual . For light cars , the fluid that is generally used is either SAE 75W-80 or 75W-90 .Oil drain pan under read diff. Remove upper plug, set aside. Remove lower plug and drain out the gear oil. Clean the lower plug, inspect for shavings. Replace lower plug.
