In some situations, the Evo shield is my absolutely favorite shield, but if I am in a daring mood and just want to mow through things, while dying a lot, I go for the BeeHawk. Maya can get a lot of boosts for SMG's. Look for a good CAT mod, can dramatically increase SMG damage, my current one raises SMG damage by 103%.

Maya's only one of those skills is Fleet, which really isn't useful enough to completely give up the shield over. This is how I roll Siren in team builds. Lots of healing for you and your teammates with a little extra Damage and Bullet Speed so you can heal them even faster. Also remember that enemies stay still but your friends don't. The hardest thing about healing in Borderlands is learning each of your friends movement types.

Purple Witch Maya Skill Tree. Your main goal is get to last skill in Harmony as soon as possible. Motion and Cataclism has pretty much same priority, but green is for better support and red is for better you, so choose yourself. You'll be good at both when you reach 72 level anyways.Increases Maya's maximum health by 3% per level and allows her to shoot her allies, healing them for 6% per level of gun damage. 5/5 - 15% maximum health, 30% healing. 11/5 - 33% maximum health, 66% healing. I use a Scorn build most, but go SS for speed runs. SS downsides are pretty badly overblown, most likely because people frequently pair it with a Legendary Binder. The extra Suspension boost makes it more painful when the orb gets weird. I prefer to use it with L Siren or L Cat.
The Siren doesn't play like other FPS games. The Siren makes full use of Borderlands' elemental effect system and requires a more tactical level of play. Sirens eschew guns that deal the most damage at once for guns that deal elemental effects. When you start out as a Siren, the benefits aren't obvious.
