The Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike system opened in stages from November 23, 1955, to November 7, 1957, and was originally designated Pennsylvania Route 9. The hairpin curve at the highway's northern terminus was designed to allow for expansion northward to the New York state line.
