The bridge was opened to traffic by the governors of Washington and Oregon in August 1966. Megler is the name of the area on the Washington side of the bridge, the landing for the 14th Street Ferry which crossed the river here. Joseph Megler was a pioneer and Washington State legislator who owned land in the area in the late 19th century.
