Not sure if you need to upgrade it at Jose first or not, but you need to get to the treasure room before you can fight the boss, so if you're struggling, you can just visit Mementos and upgrade it before going back.

I actually had to utilise Baton Passing in order to beat them. They had too much HP and the little guys kept fully healing the miniboss otherwise.
