Lots of options for the 383 from mild to wild, 400-500HP is easy to achieve, everyone offers a crate in those HP ranges.Received 3 Likes on 3 Posts. If you were to build 2 motors, identical except that one was a 383, and the other was the 406, the 406 will make more power across the entire rpm range. Choosing the larger motor allows you to attain you HP goal at a lower projected RPM than the smaller 383.I am very happy with the throttle response also. I haven't tried a dual plane on it. With the solid roller and the 210 heads you 406 should really want to rpm. Here's an example that will have you scratch your head. SRP flat top 383 piston for 5.7" rod = 472 gm. SRP flat top 383 piston for 6.0" rod = 419 gm. Eagle SIR 5.7" rod = 535 gm.It is going in a 1989 firebird, probably ~3500lbs pretty easily with driver. As a 383 with the following specs, it ran a 7.85 in the 1/8th which should be around a 12.3 in the 1/4. It had a little rumble at idle, but nothing radical. The 383 was a mismatch, so I hope the 406 does a little better.

I used to do lots of 406 engines, but the blocks are getting soo rare, most of the time now I can only do a 383. The stock block is good up to about 650 HP, after that, you better get an aftermarket block.

The 383 is a bit more radical on the heads/cam combo but it still makes all of the power of the 377 but of course has a ton more low end grunt! The 383 runs the numbers with a 2800-3200 stall and the valvetrain doesn't take a beating.
