Powder for 45-70.
When I had a 45-70, the recommended powder was 4198. 35gr gave me 1500fps with 405 LFN. The only handgun powder listed in loaddata.com was 2400 in an 1873 Trapdoor. I use Unique in my 45 Colt handloads. A lot of people post on the internet using Unique for this round, but I wouldn't. If it was safe, the data would be in the manuals.

Although suitable loads for the 45-70 could be developed with TAC, it is evident that the two sources I know of chose X-Terminator to develop loads for the 45-70. It depend as it does with most other cartridges with cast bullets but also because the 45-70 can be loaded to 4 different levels with cast bullets. "Trapdoor" and replica rifles plus all modern rifles in good condition: 300 grain Hornady InterLock HP bullet, 52.0 grains of IMR 3031 powder, Federal 210 primer, Winchester case. MV 1,800 fps in 29.5" barrel.

I think Lil Gun is too fast of a burning powder for the 45-70. It is a high pressure powder. If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it. My mold has been lapped to drop at .459". My Sharps likes boolits seated to touch the lands (2.95" LOA). 25-28 grains of 5744 should get you in the 1200-1300fps range.
